Keep a prompt stable

How to change a prompt without losing the version that already worked.

Separate the payload

Keep the words you send to the model apart from the title, the note to yourself, and the example output. The title can change every week. The payload changes only when you mean to change the behavior.

Pin the inputs

Mark every blank the next person must fill, and say what belongs there. {{diff}} is a diff, not a whole repository. A named blank is a contract. An unnamed “paste stuff here” is how private context leaks into a public prompt.

Change one sentence

When a result is wrong, change one instruction and run the same input again. If you rewrite the whole payload, you will not know which sentence fixed it, and you cannot put the old sentence back.
